Although it may seem that social stigma surrounding cannabis has loosened across North America in recent years, the internet still remains relatively anti-pot. At least when it comes to advertising. “There’s a lack of support from tech companies in general for cannabis companies”, said Paris Holley, co-founder of the Mantis advertising network. Companies like Google and Facebook have strict policies in place against businesses trying to promote marijuana related products.

The biggest problem is due to the fact that other companies do not want to put their portfolio at risk by being promoted on websites featuring cannabis content and pot websites do not want to be affiliated with mainstream national brands.

Current changes to the internet might persuade Facebook and Google to re-examine their anti-pot policies and hopefully arrive at a working solution sometime in the near future. If that does indeed happen, other companies will follow and eliminate pot discrimination in digital marketing.
